Everlasting Father

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace

Isaiah 9:6

We often use the name ‘God the Father’ to differentiate him from ‘God the Son,’ but in this verse we see that the Son is also someone shares the characteristics of a father. Part of this is the fact all things were made through him (Col. 1:16), so he is like a father to the whole of creation. This means that he also cares for it, like a good father looks after his children. He will never abandon this responsibility, so he is going to be like a father forever. His greatest act of care towards the creation is his coming restoration of it – something which he makes us ready for when he saves us. Our salvation required his birth as a child, as this verse tells us!
